Lagendijk Dept. of Radiotherapy, University Medical Centre, Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands, Dept. of Radiology, University Medical Centre, Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands Introduction The application of MR imaging at high field (B0 ≥ 3 T, f ≥ 128 MHz) faces considerable challenges with respect to uniformity of the RF magnetic excitation (B1 ) field and power deposition. Wave behaviour and penetration effects causing severe degradation of the image quality, have been reported both numerically and experimentally [1,2]. Furthermore, the stronger coupling of the RF field to small anatomical features with high dielectric contrast can lead to local high SAR values [3]. This concern has become more acute at high field MR imaging since the RF dissipation increases quadratically with the Larmor frequency.

Four Channel Transceiver Array for Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in the Human Visual Cortex at 9.4 T

Introduction: Functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (fMRS) at ultra-high field (UHF) strength (≥7T) is a method to investigate the metabolism of the human brain during task induced stimulation [1] or pharmalogical challenge [2]. A region of special interest is the visual cortex which undergoes metabolic changes during visual stimulation [1]. The UHF thereby allows for increased spectral an...

MR Physics for Physicists / B1 Shimming and Parallel Transmission

METHODS: Currently, among other means, modifications of the applied RF pulses are investigated to cope with the mentioned B1 inhomogeneities. First, using a coil array for RF transmission, standard slice selective pulses can be transmitted with different weights in the different array elements (see, e.g., [2-4]). These weights, i.e., amplitude and phase of each element, are designed to yield a ...

Parallel Excitation: Making SENSE of High-Field Body MRI

MR imaging at high B0 field strength presents significant diagnostic opportunities derived from enhancements in SNR, spectral resolution and image contrast. However there are technical challenges that substantially hamper the practice of high-field MRI, including a major one that is related to the exploitation of the radio frequency EM field (B1 field and concomitant E field). As field strength...

Influence of a Receive-array Coil on Specific Absorption Rate at 3T: Simulations and Experiments with Basic Geometries

Introduction: Receive-only (Rx) phased-array coils are used routinely in clinical situations for a number of purposes including achieving higher SNR [1] and shorter imaging times [2], but how their presence affects the RF field distribution during transmission is not routinely considered. At a minimum, the receive array introduces highly conductive surfaces with their associated boundary condit...

Fast phase-modulated B1+ mapping in the low flip-angle regime

Introduction and purpose: In high-field MRI phased transmit arrays are used to mitigate RF issues, e.g. optimizing the inhomogeneous B1 field using spatially tailored RF pulses played out by such an array. In order to design the RF pulses that produce the desired excitation field, the B1 field per coil must be mapped. Ideally, these B1 mapping techniques are fast and have a low SAR deposition. ...
